As the world’s population continues to multiply by 200,000 people per day countries with the fastest growing population and economic growth, such as China and India, are increasingly moving from a starch-based diet to one that includes more grains.
All of these grains are greatly enhanced by potash’s excellent fertilizing properties.
Saskatchewan is home to three of the world’s leading potash producers: Potash Corporation, Mosaic Company and Agrium. Originally discovered in 1943, the province retains 53% of the world’s known potash reserves.
However, current Saskatchewan potash production capacity is being generated from aging infrastructure. |
In fact, the last potash mine shaft in Saskatchewan was completed in the mid-seventies. A serious bottleneck in shaft hoisting capacities was recognized by today’s producers as being a primary obstacle in the ability to respond to the growing demand for potash.
Making matters more difficult, shaft sinking in Saskatchewan potash mines is an extremely complex and capital intensive process. Ground freezing technology is required to penetrate through unconsolidated rock and water bearing structures. A water tight seal must be maintained during the entire sinking process and a perimeter metal liner, as well as a concrete shaft liner, must be installed during the sinking process.
With this understanding and a belief that joint ventures have historically proven to optimize experience and technical knowledge, |
Associated Mining Construction Inc. (AMC), a newly formed joint venture between Redpath Mining and Thyssen Mining, was created to best service the Saskatchewan and Manitoba potash mining industry.
AMC is a separate corporate entity, complete with a full complement of project management, operational and technical personnel. The joint venture parties provide governance through a board of directors.
The first AMC project began in June, 2008 with the design of a new 1000m mine shaft for Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan at Rocanville. The expansion of the Rocanville mine will increase Potash Corp’s capacity by 2.7 million tonnes per year after 2012. Proving that any demand can be met through combined experience, knowledge and a
“can do” spirit!
